TriSkills believes social skills are closely related to communication because it is hard for children (all people) to be social unless they have some way to communicate with others.
Social skills involve abilities that are emphasised during the TriSkills programs to:
• Stay calm when other people are around as some children may feel overwhelmed and anxious in the social settings of a class
• Create an interest in what the staff do or say
• Understand that others have a point of view which might be different from their own
• Practice reading the non-verbal cues of others, such as body language and tone of voice
• Wait their turn, and pass the turn on to someone else
• Know what to do when a conversation gets stuck or breaks down – for example, when they misunderstand what the staff say or do
• Understanding and deal with sarcasm
• Know how to start and stop a conversation
