TriSkills believes Independence is an outcome which is important throughout childhood, beginning in infancy. The programs assist with the development of independence in many areas, of which the following are just a few:
• Moving
• Recovering when hurt or upset
• Coping when something goes wrong
• Separating from parents to come to school
• Taking care of own possessions
• Following the routines of the day
The routines exercised through the programs provide great opportunities to learn and build each child’s independence.
TriSkills understands the challenge of giving children the time to move and do things themselves – it is often hard to do. Children with disabilities take much longer to do things without help, and often the result might not be as good. They can become frustrated when they can’t get things right, or may even refuse to try. TriSkills staff can help the children to problem solve around these challenges, giving them time in targeted ways, starting small and building gradually.
